territory and local archeology. The project was designed by Alberto Manzi, an educator and mayor of Pitigliano from 1995 to 1997. After his death in 1997, the project was continued and in 2004, the new museum was inaugurated.

The museum is divided into two areas:

City of the Living, where there are models of two houses, a small circular house made with clay and straw and modelled after a 12th-11th century BC (Final Bronze Age) house, and another model of an ancient Etruscan house in masonry with a kitchen, an area dedicated to the hearth and a bed chamber modelled on a 7th-6th century BC (Archaic Age) house. To get to the second part of the museum, the City of the Dead, you have to walk through a real Etruscan road, known as the Via Cava del Gradone, passing a panoramic terrace view of the Jewish Cemetery and the Torrente Meleta valley, as well as the Chapel of Saints Giacomo and Filippo Apostoli, dating back to 1600.

City of the Dead, or the Etruscan Necropolis. Inside one tomb are models of married couple, Velthur and Larthia, with their accompanying belongings (dishes, objects of daily use and jewels). The trail continues through the woods until you reach the Necropolis of Gradone with some real examples of chamber tombs from the 7th century BC. Also part of the museum is the Necropolis of San Giovanni, dating back to the 6th century BC with chamber tombs entirely carved into the tufa rock. There are also some 2nd-century caisson tombs and two lovely monumental tombs.

Museo Archeologico all’Aperto A.Manzi

SP 127 Pantano – via Cava del Gradone
Cell. 3895933592
Tel. 0564614067
www.comune.pitigliano.gr.it

Opening time

10:00 13:00 – 16:00 20:00

last admission to the visitor one hour before closing time.

Entry Ticket

Full ticket €4
Reduced ticket €2

A.Manzi Outdoor Archaeological Museum The “Alberto Manzi” Outdoor Archaeological Museum was created as an educational museum for those looking to discover the territory and local archeology.
