heart of the Old Town of Pitigliano, Palazzo Orsini is probably the town\u2019s most famous monument.<\/p>\n<p>Built between the 11th and 12th centuries as a convent, the building was then purchased in the second half of the 13th century by the Aldobrandeschi who turned it into their residence. Following the marriage of the last heir of the family, Margherita Aldobrandeschi, to Romano Orsini, the palace passed to the Orsini in 1293.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Orsini government, the palace was restored by the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. The restoration works fortified the building and transformed it into an elegant residence with Renaissance features.<\/p>\n<p>Today the palace is an imposing building formed by a large keep, surrounded by two towers.
