The sacred buildings and historic palaces of Valentano are very beautiful: the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Apostolo and Evangelista, dating back to the 12th century, the Church of Santa Maria, built in the 15th century, the Church of Santa Croce, the Palazzo Comunale, in Renaissance style , Porta Magenta, also known as Porta del Mascherone, the Monumental Palace of the Vitozzi and the Cruciani Palace.

The Islands of Lake Bolsena

Bisentina Island: it is the main of the two islands of Lake Bolsena, located opposite the town of Capodimonte. The island is also mentioned in the Divine Comedy in the IX canto of the Paradise. The island was inhabited since the Etruscan period, probably placed under the control of the nearby Visentium. Around the year one thousand it obtained the recognition of a Free Municipality, in the 13th century it was conquered and its buildings partially destroyed by Pope Urban I – the island takes its name from that of the pontiff -, in this period the island was transformed into a prison and housed the condemned heretics, it also became a place of retreat for the hermits who visited the Church of San Giovanni Battista. At the end of 1300 control of the island passed to the Farnese family, a century later, in 1431 Pope Eugene IV granted the Franciscans the construction of a convent. On the island there are some splendid buildings, the Church and Convent of Saints Giacomo and Cristoforo, built in the second half of the 15th century, is a Greek cross building, the Seven Churches, built on the perimeter of the island, were built by the Franciscan friars who lived on the Bisentina Island, are the Churches of Santa Caterina, the Chapel of the Crucifix, the Church of San Pio Papa, the Chapel of the Transfiguration, the Church of San Francesco, the Church of Santa Concordia and the Church of San Gregorio Magno. Particularly interesting, the Malta of the Popes, a construction probably dating back to the Etruscan period, is a sort of gallery used as a prison.

Martana Island: located in front of the village of Marta, from which it takes its name, it is the smaller of the two islands of Lake Bolsena. The island is uninhabited and privately owned, in the past it housed an Augustinian convent. According to legend, the island hosted the remains of Santa Cristina, to protect them from the incursions of the barbarians. The island was also the site of one of the most tragic events in the history of Tuscia, right here in fact the queen Amalasunta, daughter of the king of the Goths Theodoric, was kidnapped and killed by the cook Teodato, who wanted to ascend the throne in his place, on the 20th. The first traces of human settlements occur towards the end of the Neolithic. The lake area was then inhabited during the Iron and Bronze Ages. In the Etruscan era four cities arose, Visentum, Civita di Grotte di Castro, Cornossa and Bolsena. When the city of Volsinii fell, the lake became part of the Roman Empire. At the fall of the Roman Empire, the lake became a place of incursions by Lombards and Saracens, it is in this period that the king of the Goths, Theodatus, had the Amalasunta cuisine, daughter of Theodoric, imprisoned and killed on the island of Martana. In the twelfth century the territory was affected by the struggles for power between Orvieto, Viterbo and the Papal States, the latter succeeded in establishing itself, thanks to the intervention of Cardinal Egidio Albornoz. In 1537 the Duchy of Castro was founded at the behest of Pope Palo III, the duchy was entrusted to the pontiff’s son, Pier Luigi Farnese, and included the cities of Marta, Capodimonte, Bisenzio, Gradoli, Grotte di Castro, San Lorenzo, Borghetto and the two islands Martana and Bisentina. Until 1649, the year of the fall of the Duchy of Castro, the territory was governed by the Farnese family, to then return under the control of the State of the Church. In the eighteenth century the lake undergoes a progressive rise of the waters, creating marshy areas from which important malaria epidemics were generated, it is in this period that the cities of Bisenzio and Borghetto disappear, incorporated by the larger cities. After 1860, the year of the unification of Italy, the area of Lake Bolsena was the protagonist of banditry phenomena, widespread throughout the territory of the lower Maremma and Alta Tuscia, this phenomenon was definitively eradicated only in the early 1900s. .

More information on Lake Bolsena: https://bolsena.it/

Lago di Bolsena In the heart of Tuscia, Lake Bolsena is the largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe.
